The Psychological Impact of COVID-19: Addressing Burnout, Compassion Fatigue, & Work-Related Conditions

It’s becoming clear that the toll of the pandemic on pharmacists is not merely physical. The additional and continuous demands placed on the pharmacy workforce by the pandemic are contributing factors to pharmacist burnout. This, in addition to work-related conditions, illness and grief caused by the outbreak, together with social isolation, economic instability, and sudden changes in day-to-day life, has placed considerable strain on pharmacists’ wellbeing.

  • Learning Objectives
    1. Discuss the psychological impact of COVID-19 on pharmacists.
    2. Identify the multiple factors, including vicarious trauma, work-related conditions, and compassion fatigue that can lead to exhaustion and burnout among pharmacists.
    3. Discuss effective strategies that can be employed by pharmacies and pharmacist staff to prevent burnout and ensure staff wellbeing.
